"Whilst in Nightline I learnt not only how to listen but how to lead - Claire, Aberystwyth Nightline"
We are currently collecting experience stories from Nightline Volunteers, past and present. These stories will eventually be shared on our Wall of Experiences which we hope to encourage others to volunteer for Nightline and to inspire other Universities to setup their own Nightline service.
If you are a current or ex Nightliner and want to contribute to our wall, please click here. If you are a current Nightliner you can remain anonymous.
We haven't finished collecting these stories yet, but to give you an idea of the project, below are some of the recent submissions from current and past Nightliners.
"It was a family member, from a different uni, who recommended I join Nightline. He said it was the best thing he had ever done, and that was what sold me. Training was hard, and not what I expected, but I made it through, and since my first duty I never looked back - Harriet, Edinburgh Nightline " Read more
"Nightline is not just an alternative society to pass the time at university, it is a challenge that not many people take on to step outside your normal activities and listen to the lives of students around you. It can be tough at times but there is a huge amount of support available from your friends in the organisation. I am proud of the person I became because of Nightline and I hope that other people are willing to take up the same challenge - anonymous, UEA Nightline" Read more
"Nightline has been one of the greatest things (if not the greatest thing) i have done in my time at University - Anonymous, Durham Nightllne" Read more
"Volunteering with Nightline is a challenging, life-affirming, enriching experience - and above all it was some of the best fun I had a university! - Clare, Exeter Nightline (Voice)" Read more
"More than anything volunteering with Nightline gave me a massive boost to my confidence and shaped my personality. Before joining Nightline I was very shy and quiet, whereas after Nightline I was able to chair meetings, give input into discussions, and talk to anyone. In a way Nightline gave me courage, and confidence to know that I can handle more than I ever thought I could - Ruth, York Nightline" Read more
"The main reason I joined Nightline was because I wanted to be part of something at University. There was also a slightly different reason, one that not many people know. When I’d been at school, one of my best friends lost her mum to cancer. I’m going to be honest and say that I didn’t know how to deal with it. I hoped that Nightline would teach me how to deal with these situations, and maybe I could help other people when I hadn’t been able to help her. Nightline did this for me, but it did even more. Nightline opened my eyes. - Amy, Exeter Nightline (Voice)" Read more
"There were difficult calls, but knowing that you are there as the person that cares in the middle of the night is something that is so worthwhile and I am so glad to know that there are so many nice people out there who care enough to play that part. - Anonymous, Southampton Nightline" Read more
"Nightline provides the potential to change the lives of both the caller and the volunteer listener, both for the better. Students do need, and always will have need for, a Nightline service at the other end of the phone. - Nathaniel, Cardiff Nightline" Read more
"It's tiring, it's emotional, it's stressful, and it's the best thing I've ever done; although it might sound strange, everything about being a Nightliner was fun, even doing duties, and I'd recommend it to anyone - Siobhan, Edinburgh Nightline" Read more
"I am writing this from Namibia where I am currently volunteering, with Nightline being largely to thank for that. -Peter, Bath Nightline" Read more
"I joined Nightline in my first year at uni and after so long it feels like part of me to be someone who listens, who knows what to do in an emotional crisis. - Claire, Aberystwyth Nightline" Read more
